Obituary

Eleanor High, 82, of Griswold, IA, died Sunday evening, April 10, 2011 at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic.

Eleanor Lucy Weirich was born at Lewis, IA, on October 28, 1928, the daughter of Reuben and Gladys (Reynolds) Weirich. She graduated from Lewis High School in 1946 and then taught in the country schools until her marriage to Bernard Lee High on August 6, 1950, at Elliott, IA. They moved to the family farm shortly after their marriage, and she has lived there since. Eleanor worked at the Eveready Battery Plant in Red Oak for 20 years and retired in 1990. Bernard died on June 5, 1995. Eleanor loved the outdoors. She enjoyed her garden, watching and feeding the birds, fishing, hunting, camping and snowmobiling. She made several quilts, sewed clothing, canned her fruits, vegetables and meat, made her jams and jellies, and tried to be a good neighbor.

Preceding Eleanor in death were her parents, her husband, her daughter Kathy in 1986, and her brothers Glen and Gerald Weirich.

Survivors include her daughter Cheryl Zimmerman of Griswold, her sons Ed and his wife LaDonna of Otho, IA; and Russell and his wife Mary of Phoenix, AZ; her grandchildren Michelle High of Carroll, IA; Richard High of Webster City, IA; Nellie High and Robert High of Phoenix; Nichole (Damian) Burrus of Shelby, IA; Stacy Zimmerman of North Liberty, IA; Melanie and Katie Zimmerman of Griswold; John and Chris Dorr of Sioux Falls, SD; and Nick (Karen) Dorr of Lemars, IA; and her 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother Reuben (Butch) Weirich and his wife Lavone of Lewis, her sister Evelyn Koontz of Anchorage, AK, her sisters-in-law Wilma Weirich of Oakland, Joan Weirich of Atlantic, and Ruby Anderson of Atlantic, and her brother-in-law Jim Murphy of Missouri.

Funeral services will be held at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at 1:30 PM. Burial will be in the Whipple Cemetery northwest of Griswold. Open visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 7:30.
