Dorothy Ann Schroder


Dorothy Ann Schroder, the daughter of Harriett (Johnson) and Harry E. McAlpine, was born March 8, 1924 at Appleton, MN and died December 18, 2012 at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA at the age of 88 years, 9 months, and 10 days.


Dorothy's mother died 11 days after her birth. Her grandmother, Lillian McAlpine brought her back to Omaha to live with her daughter, Maud Brader and her husband Harry Brader. She attended Windsor and Jackson School in Omaha and moved to Council Bluffs and attended Washington, and Bloomer, and then graduated from Abraham Lincoln High in 1942. Dorothy worked for Dr. Marry and Matthew Tinley, the Burlington Railroad in Omaha, the bomber plant in the purchasing department until the end of WWII, Hugh Motors, and Peoples Store as a bookkeeper and cashier on the 2nd floor.


On May 7, 1946 Dorothy was united in marriage to Dwayne E. Schroder at Hiawatha, KS. They lived with his mother until December and then moved to Pease, MN, where they lived for 2 years. They returned to Hancock where they lived on the Jensen Farm, then Uncle Edwards's farm before moving to the home place. They farmed until March 6, 2002, when Dwayne died. Dorothy moved to Peacehaven in Walnut in 2007.


Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband Dwayne; her parents; her sister Helen (McAlpine) Willett; and her stepsister Phyllis Holstrom.


She is survived by her children: Twyla Shaffer of New York, Ken Schroder of Council Bluffs, and Donald Schroder and wife Marina of Hancock; her grandchildren: Stacy, Christina, Cayla, Emily, Levi, Justin and wife Megan, Connor, Morgan, and Jolene; her great grandchildren: CJ, MacKinzie, MacKade, and MacKendrick; her brother Donald E. McAlpine and wife Katherine of Sun City, AZ; her sister Lillian Phenicia and husband of Springfield, VA; her brother-in-law Paul Schroder and wife Carolyn of Hancock; and her special friends: Maxine Brandes, Mavis Coatney, Shelly Naigg, and Kathy Grote. Dorothy is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.



Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at 10:00 AM at the Hancock United Methodist Church. Interment will be at the Silver Creek Cemetery. An open visitation will be held at the Rieken Vieth Funeral Home on Friday. The family will be present from 4-7 PM at the funeral home. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
