Dorothy Peters, age 94, of Red Oak, formerly from Griswold, died August 13, 2019 at the Red Oak Rehab and Care Center in Red Oak, Iowa. She was the daughter of Harry W. and Zella Maude (Perkins) Kindig. She born on December 16, 1924 east of Henderson.
Dorothy attended country school east of Henderson, until they moved north of Red Oak. She then attended country school near there until her father died on May 6, 1930. Her mother and she moved to Oakland, Iowa, for a short time and then back to Henderson, where she finished school at age 16. She then began working as a substitute telephone operator.
In 1944, Dorothy and her mother moved to Lewis and she worked as a telephone operator. On June 26, 1945, Bill Peters and Dorothy were united in marriage. They moved to Griswold where she worked in several grocery stores. In September of 1951 she was hired at the Griswold Coop Telephone Company as the chief operator and bookkeeper.
Dorothy and Bill moved to his family farm in 1954, near Flechter Chapel. They farmed until November 22, 1963 when Bill had a very bad heart attack. They then moved back to Griswold and she worked at the Griswold State Bank. In 1972 she was hired as a bookkeeper for Hokenstad and Wilson until 1979. Dorothy worked for Johnk Insurance and Real Estate until she retired in February of 1989.
Bill had a heart attack and stroke in 1995, he died on August 18, 1995. On December 23, 1997, Dorothy was married to Max H. Miller. They had many of the same interests. They loved square dancing and also ballroom dancing. They were very happy years for them. Max developed kidney failure and was on dialysis for 6 years. He died very suddenly at their home on September 15, 2009.
Dorothy was preceded in death by both of her husbands; her father and mother in laws; Raymond and Madge Peters; her parents; and her step-granddaughter, Brittany Ruhl.
Dorothy is survived by close friends: Kay Cary and family, Jim and Glenda Wyman and family, and Bob and Celeste Peck and family; her step-children: Becky (Miller) DuBois and her sons, Taylor and Jordan, Nathan Miller and family, Zoe Ruhl and family; her nieces: Joyce Lewis and husband, Dick and their family, Judy Lewis and family; her many friends.
Dorothy's funeral service will be Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at 2:00 PM at the Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Lewis. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Rieken Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
