Dorothy Lucille
King
November 15, 1918 – June 27, 2018
Dorothy Lucille (Eden) King passed from this life on June 27, 2018, on a beautiful summer day that in the past you would have seen her working in her garden, cranking out ice cream for a picnic or having a spirited game of cards with her friends at the "Center".
She was born on the family farm in Franklin Township, Cass County, Iowa south of Wiota on November 15, 1918, the youngest child and only daughter to Otto and Bertha (Brawe) Eden. She graduated from Wiota High School in 1936. On November 26, 1937, she was united in marriage to Byron King in Grand Island, Nebraska. Three children were born to this union. They lived several different places before settling on their farm south of Lewis in 1948.
Dorothy was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic and later the Faith Lutheran Church in Griswold where she taught Sunday School and was always volunteering when needed. She was known to be quite the chicken wrangler. At one point, she had 16,000 chickens on the farm. She was employed with the United States Postal Service part time for 15 years and full time for 3 years as a rural mail carrier; retiring in 1985. Shortly after retiring, she founded the "Lewis Activity Center" where many neighbors and friends went to play cards and ate delicious food. Dorothy was known for her baking skills and would always gift her delicious baked goods to anyone stopping by her home. She lived a happy and healthy life in her own home until she was 96 years old.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years Byron King, her parents Otto and Bertha, her brothers Donald and wife Lucille Eden, and Russell and wife Bertie Eden.
Surviving and remembering her as the generous and caring mother that she was are her children: Wayne (Nadine) King of Lewis, Barbara (Darrell) Hadaway of Arvada, Colorado, Beverly (Steve) Dean of Newton, Iowa; her grandchildren: Jody (Ryan) Danker, Ryan (Leah) Hadaway, Lindsey (Ryan) McDonald, Jeff Dean, Courtney (Jason) Crum, Sean (Lisa) Hadaway, and Andrew (Scottie Ann) Dean; and 12 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family would like to give special thanks to the Atlantic Specialty Care for their gentle and loving care given to their mother in her last years. Be sad that she passed but happy that she lived a long full life and is now rewarded a place in heaven.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 2, 2018 at 10:30 A.M. at the Faith Lutheran Church in Griswold, Iowa with Pastor Roger Claxton officiating.
