Donald "Don"
Putnam
October 2, 1921 – November 24, 2019
Don Putnam, son of Leon and Carrie (Perkins) Putnam, born in Oakland, Iowa on October 2, 1921. He died at his home on November 24, 2019 at the age of 98 years and 22 days.
Don attended school until the eighth grade. He helped on the farm until he was drafted into the Army Air Corp in 1942. He served as a gunner in the Pacific Theater until honorably discharged on October 30, 1944. He then moved back to Oakland to farm. Don and Dorothy Williams united into marriage on December 7, 1946, in Hiawatha, Kansas. To this union, three children were born: Lolly, Leon and Rick. They continued farming west of Oakland and then began working for Oakland COOP. He worked there until he was 87. Don lived in Oakland until the time of his death.
Don enjoyed riding horses and going on trail rides, and going to horse sales. He liked playing cards, bowling, dancing and imitating Johnny Cash. Uncle Don was dearly loved by all his nieces.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dorothy; and his siblings, Phyllis, Dale, Darrell, Pat, Jean, Willadene, Bonnie; and his daughter-in-law, Pam.
He is survived by children: Lolly and husband Mike of Council Bluffs, and Leon and Rick Putnam of Oakland; his grandchildren: Sarah and husband Rob, Rhonda, Niki and husband Kevin, Tom and wife Amy, Stacie, Rowdy and wife Cassidy, Brandi and husband Gavin, Crissy, Rusty and Shonna; twenty-nine great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and his sisters; Judy, Karen and Linda. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, November 27, 2019, at 2:00 PM at the Oakland Community Building. Interment will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday evening from 5:30 until 7:00 PM at the Oakland Community Building. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
