Donald L. Hering

Donald L. Hering, the son of George Leslie and Vera Grace (Carse) Hering, was born in Omaha, NE on July 22, 1941 and died September 28, 2010 at Oakland, IA at the age of 69 years, 2 months, and 6 days.


Don attended school at Oakland and graduated from Oakland High School with the class of 1960. Don had started farming during high school and continued to farm while serving in the Army National Guard, following graduation. On September 16, 1969 Don was united in marriage to Nancy Burnham at the Presbyterian Church in Atlantic, IA. Don and Nancy moved to their farm west of Oakland, where they have continued to live until the time of Don's death.


Don was a lifetime member of the Sharon Presbyterian Church. He was very active in the Oakland Lions Club and the Farm Bureau, where he was currently serving as president. Don loved to visit and was known to always be willing to lend a helping hand to his friends and neighbors. Don enjoyed collecting toy tractors, and was proud to be on Oakland High School's first wrestling team.


Don is preceded in death by his parents.


He is survived by his wife Nancy of Oakland; his daughters and their spouses: Julie Kent and husband Dennis of Cherokee, IA and their son Daniel, Brenda Windmueller and husband Johan of Blair, NE, and Carrie Ball and husband Derrick of Omaha, NE and their daughter Raeghan; his sister Verna Collins and husband Kenneth of Oakland, IA; his brother Ron Hering of Oakland, IA; his parents-in-law Raymond and Jean Burnham of Griswold, IA; and his brother-in-law Nate Burnham and wife Annette of Ankeny, IA. Don is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 10:30 AM at the Sharon Presbyterian Church West of Oakland. Interment will be at the Belknap Cemetery. Open visitation will be held at the Sharon Presbyterian Church starting at noon on Friday. Visitation with the family will be at the Sharon Presbyterian Church on Friday from 5:30-7:30 PM.
