Coryell LeRoy Dorsheimer was born on January 16, 1919, in Pleasant Township, Cass County, rural Griswold, IA, the son of Frank Edward (Roy) and Cecil Mae (Chubick) Dorsheimer. He attended rural schools and graduated from Lewis High School in 1936. He entered the U.S. Army near the beginning of WWII and on February 7, 1942 was married to Lois Nadine Elliott at Brownwood, TX. During his time in the service, he spent 22 months in the European Theater. Following his discharge in October 1945, they returned to Lewis and they farmed in the Lewis area all of their married life, moving to their current farm in 1954.
Corky was a member of the Lewis Church of Christ where he taught Sunday school for 30 years, served as an elder and was treasurer of the church for a time. He had served on the Lewis School Board and had served on the Board of Directors for Iowa Christian College in Des Moines. Corky never really retired from farming and still enjoyed taking the four-wheeler and looking over the crops and the land.
Corky died Wednesday morning, March 18, 2009, at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold at the age of 90 years, 2 months and 2 days. In addition to his parents, his brother Duane and wife Leona, his sister Janet Proctor and husband Mayo and his great grandson Carter Green preceded him in death.
Left to mourn are his wife of 67 years, Lois of Lewis, his children Dennis and wife Nancy of Montezuma, IA, Janis Kunze and husband Jeff of Knoxville, TN, and Daryl of Lewis: his grandchildren [Dennis's] LeAnn (Randall) Classen of Meade, KS, and their children Logan Green, Malesa Green and Randsom Classen; Dawn Karnes of Montezuma and her children Joe, Emma and Anne; and Scott (Holly) Dorsheimer of Lincoln, NE, and their sons Grant Coryell and Bryce; [Janis's] Tonia Shaw of Knoxville TN and son Jared and Eric (Jamie) Kunze of Panora, IA and their sons Roderick Tate and Taylor. Also left to mourn are his sister Nadine Mahler of Lomita, CA, his sister-in-law Belma Dorsheimer of Griswold as well as several nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2008 at 2:00 PM at the Central Church of Christ in Griswold, Dave Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Whipple Cemetery. Friends may call at the Central Church of Christ in Griswold on Friday after 1:00 PM. The family will be present at the church from 6:00 to 7:30 PM for visitation. A memorial fund in Corky's name has been established. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is assisting the family with their arrangements.
