Obituary

Cleo was born August 16, 1928, to Frank and Vera (England) Ray of Griswold. Cleo Maxine (Ray) Steffen passed away September 18, 2015, at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold at the age of 87.


Cleo attended school at Griswold, graduating from Griswold Community School in 1946. After graduation, she worked as a secretary at the Griswold School for several years. Cleo was united in marriage to Paul E. Steffen on January 13, 1950. For 20 plus years she had the honor of working for Dr. Carl Johnson in Griswold. Following Dr. Johnson's retirement she worked shortly as a secretary in Atlantic. She then worked at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold as Supervisor of Housekeeping for 21 years.

Cleo was a member of the Church of Christ in Griswold and a lifelong member of the Griswold Legion Auxiliary.

Cleo enjoyed her love for taking care of the house, baking, neighboring, golfing, and riding bicycles. At one time she was the catcher for the local adult softball team and had been an EMT for Griswold Rescue. She loved spending her time with family, grandchildren and especially the great grandchildren.


Cleo is survived by her children: Karla (Lee) Auble of Arnold, Nebraska; Diane (Allen) Conner of Arnold, Nebraska; Craig Steffen of Central City, Iowa; and Jan (Ray) Preston of Griswold; her grandchildren : Rachel (Andrew) Unick of Ravenna, Nebraska; Page (Jeff) Hammond of Roseville, California; Amy (Andrey) Trinidad of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Justin Conner of Arnold, Nebraska; Amber Conner of Denver, Colorado; Landon Preston and Tanner Preston of Griswold; her great grandchildren: Conner and Addyson Trinidad, Libby Hammond, Alayna Preston, and Makenzi Preston; and her sisters, Joan (Vern) Lafrenz of Atlantic and Sharon (Ray) Curran of Arizona. She is also survived by many family members and lifelong friends of the community.


Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Paul E. Steffen of 65 years. Also, sister Dorothy (Burnell) Wheeler of Martin, South Dakota, brothers Harold/Shorty (Shirley) Ray of Lewis, Gerald/Gary Ray of Missouri.


Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at 10:30 AM at the Central Church of Christ in Griswold. Cleo will be laid to rest next to her husband Paul at the Griswold Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Monday evening from 5-7 PM at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
