Clarence "Smitty" Renfeld
Clarence "Smitty" Renfeld, the son of Andrew and Linda (Neve) Renfeld, was born May 2, 1936 in Avoca, IA and died November 17, 2013 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA, at the age of 77 years, 6 months, and 15 days.
Smitty attended school at Avoca. He drove a truck for Jim Schueman in Avoca, before being drafted into the United States Army. On July 18, 1964 he was united in marriage to Gloria Bentley at the church parsonage in Hancock, IA. They lived in Oakland before moving to a farm outside Avoca. Smitty worked and lived on the farm until 1995, when he and Gloria moved to Hancock. After moving to Hancock, Smitty worked as an over the road truck driver for Andersen Grain and Trucking in Avoca.
Smitty was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. He had been a member of the Legion in Hancock. He raised and showed registered Appaloosa horses and was a member of the Arrowhead Appaloosa Club. In later years, he enjoyed going to draft horse shows. Smitty enjoyed camping and playing cribbage. He never knew a stranger and loved socializing and telling jokes.
Smitty is preceded in death by is parents and his brother Donald.
He is survived by his wife Gloria Renfeld of Hancock, IA; his three children: John Renfeld and wife Gina of Hancock, Darla Erwin and husband Mike of New Virginia, IA, and Mary Roberts and husband Phil of Albert City, IA; his grandchildren: Cassie, Delanie, Gus, Paige, Alexis and Jake; his brothers: Gordon Renfeld and wife Margaret, Jerry Renfeld, and Wayne Renfeld and wife Aniceta; his sister-in-law Marlene Renfeld; and his uncle Mike Neve. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, November 21, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday evening from 5-7 PM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. Interment will be at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Oakland at 2:00 PM on Thursday. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements
