Obituary

Claire Carse Vance was born on September 24, 1927 four miles west of Oakland and passed away in Oakland on November 14, 2015 at 88 years, 1 month, and 21 days. He was the only child of Virgil Lowry and Alice Elizabeth (Carse) Vance. He grew up five miles west of Oakland and attended Vance country school. In 1944, he graduated from Oakland High School.

Claire was united in marriage to Marjorie Ann Barney on September 17, 1950 at Grace Presbyterian Church in Council Bluffs, IA. Three children were born to this union: Charles, Carol and Susan. Claire was drafted into the Army in 1951. He spent one year in Fort Hood, Texas and was stationed in Baumholder, Germany for one year. His son Charles was born while stationed in Germany and Claire carried a lock of Chuck's hair with him until his return home. Claire came home and commenced farming with his father. He and his father were large cattle feeders in the area at that time.

Claire and Marjorie enjoyed their 40th Wedding Anniversary in 1990 and Marge passed away in June of 1991. In 1994, he was united in marriage to Audrey McKee in Red Oak. They enjoyed traveling and attending the grandchildren's activities until Audrey's passing in 2007.

Claire was a long standing supporter of the East Pottawattamie 4-H Program. He was honored as a Friend of 4-H, Honorary member of 4-H and was inducted into Iowa's 4-H Hall of Fame in 2003. He was an asset to the 4-H program for over 70 years. As a 4-Her, Claire exhibited dairy cattle, beef cattle, and work horses at the county fair in Avoca during the '30s and '40s, with the exception of the three years everyone took off for WWII. He then moved into the position of an organizational leader for the Westside Feeders 4-H Club for ten years. He shared his love of 4-H by mentoring his three children and three grandchildren in their many 4-H projects. Claire also worked many years as the Sheep Superintendent and announcer for the East Pottawattamie county fair 4-H show. He continued to be an active supporter of the 4-H program until his death.
Claire was a lifelong member of the Oakland Sharon Presbyterian Church, which his grandfather helped build. He served as an elder, trustee and treasurer. He enjoyed all church activities including game nights and soup suppers. Claire grew up milking cows, raising draft horses and tilling the soil. He enjoyed coin collecting and in his later years, giving his "Those were the days" presentations. Claire was a member of the Farm Bureau, Pottawattamie County Sheep Producers and was active in the Soil Conservation Program, where in 2014, was awarded for his conservation windbreak. He lived at his present farm for 67 years and retired from farming in 2006. In the most recent years, he enjoyed his vacations with his family and socializing at the Oakland Senior Citizen Center.

Claire is preceded in death by his wives Marjorie and Audrey, his parents and many aunts and uncles.
