Charles W. Smith, the son of John H. and Emma B. (Potter) Smith, was born September 1, 1930, on the family farm Southeast of Griswold, IA.  Charles died July 12, 2021, at Griswold Nursing and Rehab in Griswold, IA, at the age of 90 years, 10 months, and 11 days.

Charles attended school at Griswold and graduated in 1948.  He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp, where he served from 1950 until 1952.  After being honorably discharged, Charles returned to the family farm.  He lived and worked on the farm, until several weeks ago when he moved to Griswold Nursing and Rehab.

Charles was a member of the Griswold United Methodist Church and Griswold American Legion Post #508.

Charles loved being a farmer.  From a young age, he had chosen this vocation.  The only time off the farm was when he served his country as a Marine, being stationed in California.

He was well known for his friendliness and empathy that was reflected in his daily life. When attending appointments in Omaha, literally all of the office people greeted him by first name along with a smile and friendly wave as he walked in the door.

Charles was an avid reader who took great interest in all aspects of the farming world.  Just eight days before his death, Charles was on the tractor mowing the waterways.  He dearly loved this activity.

Charles, along with his cousin, Darrel, enjoyed attending the Men's Breakfast Group at the Griswold Methodist Church.  He was also a loyal follower of conservative Republican principles.  His Donald Trump hat was an important part of his wardrobe.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters Marianne and Madalyn.

Charles is survived by many cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be on Friday, July 16, 2021, at 10:30 AM at the Griswold United Methodist Church.  Interment will be in Pleasant Township Cemetery south of Griswold.  Visitation will be Thursday evening at the Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM.  Rieken Duhn Funeral Home Griswold is assisting the family.
