Carl M. Johnson, 88, of Luther Manor in Dubuque, IA, formerly of Lincoln, Nebraska and Atlantic IA, died Friday, November 28, 2008, at Luther Manor Nursing Home.
Memorial Services were held Saturday, December 6, at 2:30 p.m. at Luther Manor Nursing Home in Dubuque. Graveside services were held at Griswold Cemetery, on Sunday, December 7 at 1:30 p.m. with military honors by the Griswold American Legion Post #508.
He was born on Sept. 10, 1920, in Lake View, Iowa, son of Dexter G. and Elsie (Kuhse) Johnson. Carl graduated from Westside High School in Westside, IA in 1938. He married Velma Grace Ackerman of Griswold, and after 27 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on Sept. 29, 2000.
Carl served his country during WWII with the Army Air Corps. He flew 24 missions over Europe. His plane was shot down on his 24th mission. They were able to land in Sweden, a neutral nation during WWII. While in Sweden, Carl served as a courier for the U.S. Embassy. He was awarded 10 medals for his devoted service during WWII.
After the war Carl was employed by Safeway Grocery Stores and became the manager at the Safeway Store in Broken Bow, NE. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Club. He was also active in the Methodist Church. Carl was a true gentleman who loved dancing, playing cards, and baseball. He had a passion for cars of any kind.
Surviving are two sons, Gregg (Damaris) Johnson of Westwood Hills, KS, and Todd Johnson of Carroll, IA; a daughter, Lynn (Dave) Wittrock of Carroll, IA; a stepson, Larry (Barbara) Croghan of Dubuque; two stepdaughters, Barbara (Michael) Lamb of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Diane (David) Greer of Raleigh, NC; three grandsons, Jason (Mindy) Wittrock of Carroll, Brent Wittrock of Kansas City, MO, and Kent (Traci) Wittrock of Overland Park, KS; nine step grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and seven step great-grandchildren.
His parents; his wife; and a sister, Helen Nelson, preceded Carl in death.
Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is assisting the family with the local arrangements.
