Buddy W. Smith, 90, of Atlantic, IA, and formerly of Elliott, IA, died Sunday evening, July 15, 2012, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.
Buddy Worth Smith was born at Elliott, Iowa, on April 2, 1922, the son of Ray "Biffie" Carroll and Jessie Elizabeth (Mercer) Smith. He graduated from Elliott High School in 1941 and was active in school sports. On February 4, 1941, he married Marjorie Lucille Zimmerman at Lewis, IA. Following Marjorie's death on July 19, 1971, he married Anna Mae Marsh Peck at Corning, IA. Buddy was a lifetime resident of the Elliott community, farmed and worked for Murren Elevator and Berry Feed. He played baseball for the Elliott Blue Sox town team and softball for the slow pitch team. Soon out of high school he began running the chain gang for football and scorekeeping for the high school athletic teams in Elliott and later in Griswold, a lifelong hobby that extended more than 50 years. When his son Dick coached, he supported his teams at Ogden. He enjoyed going for coffee at 10:00 AM, going out to eat any meal, and taking vacations and traveling. Following a pelvic bone fracture, he lived at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center.
Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marjorie and his brother Harold.
Survivors include his wife Anna Mae of Elliott, his sons Dick (Lynn) Smith of Ogden, IA; and Denny Smith of Steamboat Springs, CO; stepsons Bob (Celeste) Peck of Griswold, Billy (Diane) Peck of Council Bluffs, IA; Russell (Marcella) Peck of Atlantic, IA; and David (Lisa) Peck of Elliott. His granddaughters are Cassie (Jeremy) Britton of Lake Park, IA; and Emily (fiancé Austyn Wolfe) Smith of Ft. Dodge, IA. Also surviving are 11 step-grandchildren, 5 step-great-grandchildren, one niece and two nephews as well as many friends.
Funeral services will be at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at 10:30 AM, Pastor Terry McClain of the Elliott Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery at Elliott. Open visitation will be at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold and visitation with the family will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday evening.
