Obituary

Betty Barnes, 79, of Griswold, IA, died Wednesday morning April 11, 2012, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, IA.

Betty Jane Halterman was born January 3, 1933, at Lincoln, NE the daughter of Edwin Everett and Alma (Faire) Halterman. She grew up in the Dawon, NE area and during her 6th grade year, the family moved to Bellevue, NE, where she finished High School. She attended one year of college at Nebraska Wesleyan and transferred the remaining 3 years at a college in Ft. Collins, CO. On June 20, 1954 she married Robert Lionel Barnes at Bellevue and they lived at Ft. Riley, KS, until Bob was discharged from the service in 1955. They lived and farmed at Griswold and Bob preceded her in death on January 13, 2003. Following his death, Betty moved to town.

Betty was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church and sang in the joint Lutheran-Methodist choir, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Friendly Neighbors Club, and the Young Mothers Club. She worked at the Griswold Care Center from 1982 until her retirement. She served Waveland Township in Pottawattamie County as Clerk for many years until she moved to town. She was a former 4-H leader and enjoyed working for Canoyer Greenhouse in the springtime during the planting season. Betty loved quilting and had made quilts for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she dearly loved.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Bob, her brother-in-law Don Schlefelbein, and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Richard and Barbara Barnes.

Surviving her are her children: Carole Barnes of Griswold; Chuck (Kim) Barnes of Papillion, NE; Janet (Rick) Shearer of Griswold, and Peggy Barnes of Griswold, and her 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters Rita (Gary) Sands and Mary Jo Schlefelbein both of Bellevue and one sister-in-law Loretta (Bob) Montgomery of Iowa City, IA.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Faith Lutheran Church in Griswold at 1:30 PM, Pastor Celeste Waymire officiating. Burial will be in the Flint Cemetery west of town. Open visitation will be at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. The family will be present from 6:00 to 7:30 Friday evening
