Arnold Mervin Kearney, the son of Mervin and Darlene Kearney, was born January 23, 1946 in Council Bluffs, IA. He died December 6, 2017 at his home in Oakland, IA, at the age of 71 years, 10 months, and 13 days.
Arnold attended school at Carson Macedonia and Oakland. He enlisted in United States Marine Corps and served his country in the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged in 1968 he returned to Oakland. On March 21, 1969, he was united in marriage to Sharon Hamilton at the Oakland Christian Church. They lived in several different places before returning to Oakland in 1976. Arnold farmed until 1998, when he opened Kearney Signs in Oakland. He retired in 2007.
Arnold was involved in several civic organizations, East Pottawattamie County Fair Board and many horse organization boards. He was an avid supporter of the "Toys for Tots" program.
Arnold enjoyed water skiing, riding and showing horses, snowmobiling, camping, snowboarding, motorsport racing and 4-H activities. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
Arnold is preceded in death by his parents, Mervin and Darlene Kearney; and his father-in-law, Allen Eugene Hamilton and many aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his wife Sharon of Oakland, IA; his children: Loree Phelps and fiancé Dave Gregory of Carson, IA, Julie Bokhoven and partner Dan Peters of New Sharon, IA, and Thomas Kearney and wife Beth of Loveland, CO; his grandchildren: Joshua Kennen of Ventura, CA, Skyler Meyer of New Sharon, IA, Cortney Meyer of New Sharon, IA, and Mason Kearney of Loveland, CO; his mother-in-law Loree Hamilton of Oakland, IA; his sister Cynthia Perkins and husband Don of Cincinnati, OH; his sister-in-law Sandy Hamilton of Vinton, IA, his brothers-in-law, Steve Hamilton and wife Dianna of Oakland, IA and Scott Hamilton and wife Kathy of Chatham, MA; his aunt Dorothy Olsen; and his uncle Blaine Kearney. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A graveside will be on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Oakland. A prayer service will be on Friday evening at 5:30 PM at the Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland, followed by visitation with the family until 7:30 PM. On Saturday evening at 6:00 a reception will be held at Tailgators Bar and Grill, in Oakland, for his family and friends. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
