Obituary

Amy Anita Shimer, the daughter of Jerry Dean and Bonnie (Musgrave) Baxter, was born November 27, 1971, at the Aurora Community Hospital in Aurora, Missouri, and died July 28, 2020, at her home in Griswold, Iowa, at the age of 48 years, 8 months, and 1 day.

Amy was baptized in the Baptist Faith in Missouri as a child. She attended Aurora Community School in Aurora, Missouri and later the Monett Community School in Monett, Missouri. Amy worked various jobs as a housekeeper and janitorial positions in Missouri. During this time, she also raised her two children, Kelly and Vincent and helped raise her granddaughter.  She then was employed at Red Monkey Spices in Republic, Missouri, for 5 years. In 2015, she made her home in Creston, Iowa.

On June 10, 2016, she was united in marriage to Eric A. Shimer at the Candle Lit Church in Dallas Center, Iowa. They lived in Creston until they moved to Griswold, Iowa in April of 2019. Amy loved traveling over the road with Eric and got to visit most of the continental United States. Two of her favorite restaurants while traveling were Smokey Pokey BBQ in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and R Place in Morris, Illinois. Amy was an avid concert goer and had to at least attend 1 concert a year if not more if time allowed her to. She also had a large collection of Cherished Teddies. She enjoyed everything with horticulture and had several plants she loved to take care of. While living in Griswold, she was delighted to watch the Old Soldiers Reunion Parade for the last two years.

She is preceded in death by her father, Jerry Dean Baxter, and several aunts, uncles, and other relatives.

Amy is survived by her husband, Eric A. Shimer of Griswold, IA; her daughter Kelly and husband Thomas Vaughan of Neosho, MO; her son, Vincent and wife Tara Swadley of Marionville, MO; her two granddaughters, Tatiana Clark of Monett, MO and Brynleigh Rose Swadley of Marionville, MO; her mother, Bonnie Bollinger and significant other Mike both of Aurora, MO; her brothers, Gerald Baxter and significant other Sue both of Aurora, MO, Rex Baxter and significant other Christy both of Springfield, AR; her sister, Shelia and husband John Stewart of Neosho, MO; her mother-in-law, Anita Ruth Shimer of Creston, IA; her brother-in-law, Robert Shimer of Creston, IA; her nephews, Jayson and Brandon Shimer both of Creston, IA; her niece, Rebecca Shimer of Jamaica, IA; other relatives and friends.

Amy and the family would like to thank the staff of all the following including Dr Harichand of the John Stoddard Cancer Center at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, the gals of Carroll Area Nursing, Every Step Hospice, Specialty Care at Atlantic Medical Center, Dr. M.A. Johnson,MD for Emergency care, the ladies and gentlemen at the registration desk, the nursing staff of Helen Powell at Iowa Methodist 3 rd floor, Fremont Contract Carriers of Fremont, NE, and Dr. Lonnie Miller . And at last thank her mother-in-law, Anita Ruth Shimer for being there with her during her illness.

The family will greet friends on Saturday, August 1, 2020, from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. at the Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold, Iowa. We will then process from the funeral home at 2:00 P.M. for a Graveside Service at the Griswold Cemetery. Interment will be in the Griswold Cemetery. Everyone is invited to bring a lawn chair for the graveside service if you would like to be seated during the service.

Memorials are preferred to the family for a later designation.

The Rieken Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of the arrangements.
