Alice Ruth Mertes, the daughter of Elmer and Emma (Wedemeyer) Byrum, was born January 2, 1928 at Adair, IA. She died February 25, 2016 at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold, IA, at the age of 88 years, 1 month, and 23 days.
After graduating from high school, Alice moved to Des Moines where she worked for a short time before returning to the Atlantic area. She then worked as a legal clerk for Cambridge Law Firm. On July 20, 1949 she was united in marriage to Lloyd Mertes at the little brown church in Nashua, IA. They lived in Fort Dix, NJ before moving back to the family farm in Adair. In 1952, they bought the welding shop in Carson, where Alice was active in the day to day operations of the business. Alice continued to live in Carson, until recently when she moved to the Griswold Care Center.
Alice was a member of the Carson United Methodist Church, the Legion Auxiliary, and the Carson Rodeo Board. She had stayed active traveling to Lloyd's association meetings. Alice & Lloyd enjoyed camping for 40 years, covering over 38 states and 4 Canadian providences. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, playing Tripoli, and going to the casino. She was an excellent cook and baker.
Alice is preceded in death by her husband Lloyd on May 27, 2012, her son Allen, her parents, and her sister Phyllis Schwab.
She is survived by her children Diane Peterson and husband Perry of Griswold and Mark Mertes and wife Amy of Carson; her grandchildren, Amy Peterson and fiancée Gage Choat of Portland, OR and Chad Peterson of Chicago, IL; and her sister Catherine Koob. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 29, 2016 at 10:30 AM at the Carson United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Carson Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, February 28, 2016 from 3-5 PM at the Carson United Methodist Church. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of arrangements.
